Bizarre clip-o-the-weekend: dog doing squats

May 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I’ve always been a fan of the bizarre. and youtube seems like kind of an inevitable evil. so with that, I bring you the first ever, inaugural bizarre video clip of the weekend. I can’t guarantee that it’ll be a routine thing, although I hope to make it so. anyway, here it be: Enjoy!

I’m not sure what’s more bizarre. the dog and the exercising, or the fact that The Beatles’ Red Album is playing.

Japanese monster movie meets shoes: Puma loves Gojira

May 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As most of you know, I’m a pretty big shoe fan, and am always greatly intrigued when there are some impressively creative ideas that come out of the shoe world… most notably, the Piet Mondrian-inspired Nike Dunk I wrote about a good while back.

Well, this time around, it’s Puma, coming out with a slightly more pop-culture-cultish release. While I love shoes, I may love the Showa-era Japanese monster movies even more (a fact few of my regular readers probably realized). so it is with that tidbit that my extacy over this new release can be understood: The Puma Terror King pack.

puma terror king godzillaEach shoe is inspired by early Japanese monster movies. the shoes include:

  • The Mecha King, a Puma First Round inspired by Mechagodzilla
  • The Terror King, a Puma Stepper inspired by King Ghidorah
  • The Ape King, a Puma Mid, inspired by King Kong (who fought godzilla in ‘62)
  • The Moth King, a Puma Clyde inspired by Mothra
  • The Lizoid King, a Puma First Round inspired by none other than Godzilla himself

A stunning amount of detail went into materials, stitching, and other various details, including printed “skills” and “attributes” under the tongue. Pretty cool homage. check out Kicks on Fire and Sole Collector for more. and of course, More pics, including images of the monsters, after the jump.

I know what I want for my birthday… the Ferris Beuler house!

May 28, 2009 · 1 Comment

Alright. I know my birthday is still two months off, but I’m not opposed to an early birthday present.

The Highland Park, Chicago house (or more specifically, the Garage) made famous by Ferris Beuler’s Day Off. This house might be the sole thing that initially got me interested in 20th Century minimalistic architechture. And ferraris.

The house, designed by by architects A. James Speyer and David Haid, and formerly owned by photographer Ben Rose (no relation), is up for only $2,300,000. Click here for more details. So… who’s gonna buy this one for me?

Public transportation can be awesome

May 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

So for those following, my journey to the southwest has concluded, and I am now in New Mexico. Posting may be a bit sporadic as I get settled, but I’ll do my best to continue with the random smattering of cool stuff. Like this piece. Whoever decided to install a few swings on San Francisco’s BART is a genius. And the resultant photos on flickr (among other places) are exquisitely beautiful. All photos from Audrey Penven (and a few more photos after the jump)

Sorry for the unannounced lack of posting. I’m currently somewhere between Portland and New Mexico, with all of my belongings in the back of a U-Haul.

Assuming the internet exists in southern New Mexico, posting should resume in a few days.

Mentos gives the bouncing balls treatement a shot

May 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I’ve come to accept that not everything needs to make sense. This is one of those times. semantically, I understand what’s going on… but it just still strikes me as a bit confusing… and the paint and what have you is kind of a stretch from Mentos. Maybe its a Canadian thing. As far as execution and creation of an atmospheric mood, it hits the nail on the head, even if it is a bit reminiscent of the bouncing bravia balls with theĀ  Jose Gonsalez track. I’m not going to complain too much. It works. Done by Cosette of Canada.

Maybe green really is the new black?

May 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I’m apprehensively fascinated by the recent increase in quality creative for green topics; whether Greenpeace, the EPA, the NRDC, or a clothing company, the quality of creative and the directness of the “green” messages is impressive. I stumbled across this spot via Osocio today.

While it’s not completely polished, the ideas and the execution are both there to tackle an issue that was once relegated to public service announcements. And while a quick visit to the BlueAvacado website reveals it’s a fairly simple marketing message to increase sales of their reusable shopping bags, I’m okay with it because the messages of social change are being presented in a more apparent and more creative fahion. And they’re actually doing some pretty positive public work as well. Interesting to watch the evolution.

Mcdonalds gets creative and captivates the tourist mind.

May 5, 2009 · 1 Comment

There are so many ad campaigns that try to do nifty/kitchy/etc./etc. kinds of executions that usually seem to fall a bit short. This McDonalds’s billboard at London’s Picadilly Citcus acually pulls of a bunch of interactive advertising stuff pretty well. And there’s actual proof… not just hypothetical connections and interactions.

Done by Shiny Red, it proves that every now and then McDonalds can still do some cool stuff. Definitely an interesting use of Flickr. Sure, some of the connections don’t really make much sense, and the YouTube page isn’t quite hitting on all cylinders, but all in all, it’s pretty cool.
