Hondas sales figures have’t been so good lately, and coincidentally, the Honda I was driving finally had enough and gave up. But this impressive showing from Weiden + Kennedy London proves that unlike my car, Honda still has some breath. Beautifully creative with strong reference stylistically to the classic honda spots like Cog.
Nice to see Honda still fighting.
Growing up in the greater metropolis of the Nike empire, my high school was one of the early testing grounds for Nike’s “Grind”, which was kind of cool, except for that year that they realized the field was way too hard and that’s why people were breaking so many bones and they had to replace the entire field… but I digress. The technology has come a long way, and this minute-long video from ManvsMachine Design & Motion Studio in London promoting Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe campaign is pretty beautiful.
The animation is gorgeous, the music is spot-on, and the voiceover works beautifully as well. Nice when it all comes together.

What does Ewan McGregor know about The Bauhaus? Apparently enough to narrate a mini-series of six videos that give a brief history of some major design movements, out out by The Open University.
You can view all six videos from Gothic Revival to Postmodernism on youtube by clicking here. The videos are concise, the animation clean. They distill concepts a bit heavily and leave out significant elements (like distilling Modernism to a quote from Mies van der Rohe?) but for about two minutes of learning, it’s pretty excellent. All six segments are definitely worth the time to watch. Very cool stuff.

So as some of you know, I had a short internship doing work for AB, i.e. Anheuser Busch… aka, Bud. I worked on some pretty extreme, pretty intense beer commercials. but I’m not sure that any really came close to this gem:
wow. The Aussies always have some good beer spots. but this spot for Hahn SuperDry might take the cake.
And an insider (and beer geek’s) tip: when a brewing company spends more on advertising than making the beer, I usually pass.
That being said, I’d love a ferret that could hand-cap my brews.
The focus of everything (relatively, of course) is become increasingly content and production-centric. Blog posts, facebook wall updates, new product launches, new campaigns, etc. etc. Content production is great and all, but when the content itself starts to lack, then what good is it?
I’m constantly surprised and disappointed by the lack of quality, finesse, and attention to detail that some cool ideas/products/people are receiving. Content just for the sake of content, regardless of polish, isn’t always a good thing. Sometimes paying close attention to minute details can make a world of difference. Take this example from Widmer Bros. Brewing Co. in Portland. The product itself is the beer, and sure, they made some decent labels to package it. But the real attention to detail is the unique and rotating “prost” printed under each and every cap.

That kind of detail is what works toward better product recognition, better name recognition, and just an all-around better product. In a time when everyone is spewing anything and everything across the world via twitter, facebook, YouTube, and even eBay, Etsy, and other retail outlets – even extending to the local grocery store, it’s nice to see some people still taking the time to look at each and every detail. Although Widmer was paying attention to the details several years ago when they re-designed their UPC Codes. Its good to see they still pay attention.

Alright. So it’s been a while… probably way too long since I last posted… and I’d be lying if I said that today marks the beginning of the revival of regular posting on this here blog. I’d like to think that’s the case, but realistically, working 70+ hours a week in retail isn’t exactly giving me a whole lot of free time (although working in a shoe store is certainly increasing my footwear collection fairly rapidly).
Anyway, in the limited time I have to scour the net, I rarely come across things that I fall in love with. This is one of them:
I know (and you may know) of my love for volkswagens and much of their advertising, but there’s definitely a reason for it. Something quirky without being over-the-top crazy. something familiar and a relaxing-without-annoying quality about the music (a-la the infamous trio infused da da da spot), and just plain fun. Simple, to the point, and effective. I’m sold. now i just need the money to afford one. (full credits if you click through to youtube).
Being ‘netless, timeless, and now computerless, spending the time I don’t have surfing the internet I don’t have access too is even more difficult… hence the continued dry spell of posting on this here blog. That doesn’t mean, however that I don’t still search for the cream of the crop.
Many of you know of my love-hate relationship with the beast formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken and their oracle of a Colonel. This past halloween, I concocted an exquisite Colonel Sanders costume, pictures to come. I was impressed. Coworkers were impressed (or maybe just amused by the nearly transparent linen pants). Either way, it was a solid costume. But it doesn’t compare in the slightest to this:
I am amazed. I better start working on next year’s costume now.
